A BED and
BREAKFAST or B&B is a designation usually used by the small home owned
accommodation provider who has a few rooms to offer guests during the
tourist season. It allows the home owner to earn a bit of extra income while
the visitor is able to sample how the average home here in Scotland. Many of
these home owners offer very good accommodation and have a wealth of local
knowledge that the tourist can tap in to.
SELF CATERING
in
the UK means that the property, normally a cottage, house, or
bungalow, is completely self contained. 'Self Contained' is
the description used in the southern hemisphere, 'Vacation Rental'
is the phrase used in North America.
GUEST HOUSE has
all sorts of connotations, particularly if you come from the
States. In the UK Guest House generally means providers that
are not quite a Hotel but more like a bed and breakfast in their
approach but having more than two letting bedrooms. Normally, also,
they may provide an evening meal. Most bed and breakfasts have
a 'closed time' during the day but Guest Houses tend to be more
flexible.
GRADING
A good proportion of the
accommodation is graded by the Scottish Tourist
Board. The Board works on a 'Star' system with a one to five
rating. 5 Star is 'Excellent' or 'World Class'.
Some providers are not
in the Tourist Board, mainly 'on principle', as we have many criticisms
of our National board. Some of these providers will be listed
on this site. No guarantee is made to their standard
