Loch Ness

Loch Ness is part of what is known as the 'Great glen'  It is 23 Miles long,1 Mile wide and averages 700 feet deep, with some parts going down to 754 feet. Loch Ness is the largest body of fresh water in the UK.  The Loch Ness is known throughout the world for its reputed monster.  Searches for the monster, or a monster like being, have gone on for many years now, and, some more recent ones have used very sophisticated sonar and imaging devices.  Nessie, as the monster is called, has eluded all attempts to find her, or IT. It is very possible that at various times there may be large fish, seals, otters or Sturgeon, which have been mistaken for a monster.  It could also be the result of the strength of the local Whisky that has coloured already colourful minds.  Regardless however, the search will go on, and the visitors will skim the surface of the Loch for that distinctive arched back.  Whether there is or there isn't a monster, Loch Ness is a monster of a Loch and worth a visit in anybody's money.

Urquhart Castle

Urqhuart Castle stands in a strong strategic position on one of Scotland's most important trade routes.  The castle is a ruin, but still stands majestically on its rocky outcrop dominating bothUrquhart castle on Loch Ness the sea and the land.  The castle has seen much action in its time and the first castle as we know it was built in about 1230 by Alexander the 2nd.   The castle is well worth a  half day visit.  There is now a new visitor centre and the facilities are good.  The castle can be quite crowded in the middle part of the summer season.

This is the Catapult at Urquart Castle

In the grounds of Urqhart Castle stands a full scale replica of a Trebuchet (giant catapult).  This device would have thrown huge stone balls some considerable distance..   Urquart Castle in Inverness
